Choosing where to stay in Santorini by location
Choose where to stay in Santorini by matching your base to the places you want to reach. Fira, Oia and Imerovigli sit along the caldera, Pyrgos is inland, and Kamari and Perissa are beach towns. These are useful geographical differences, but the address and entrance of an individual property matter as much as the village name.
A caldera location puts the volcanic landscape at the centre of your choice. A beach location puts the coast at the centre instead. Neither description tells you whether a particular room has a view, how many steps lead to it or where a vehicle can stop. Compare the exact access with your luggage and mobility needs before settling on the room.
Use the island orientation guide to identify your priorities. Then connect your base with the arrival route, so the first and last journeys fit the same plan as your sightseeing.

Fira, Oia and Imerovigli
Fira combines a caldera setting with its role as the island capital and a bus connection point. The airport bus serves Fira, and travellers continuing to Oia change there. If you expect to use public transport repeatedly, compare the walk between your proposed accommodation and the point where your bus journey begins.
Oia is characterised by cave houses and captains’ houses, with Ammoudi and Armeni among its old harbour places. Choose it for the settlement you want to spend time in, then plan the return journeys from elsewhere on the island. A room address in Oia and a vehicle meeting point near Ammoudi require separate attention to road access.
Imerovigli occupies a high position on the caldera rim. It also appears along the caldera walking route, but a place on that route does not tell you the ease of access to a room. Use the walking guide for terrain and route planning, and treat accommodation access as its own decision.

Hotel pickup and drop-off, a private driver-guide, air-conditioned transport and water for an island excursion.
Pyrgos and the beach towns
Pyrgos gives you an inland village setting around the Kasteli and traditional settlement architecture. It suits a plan that deliberately includes the interior as well as the caldera coast. Compare how you will leave and return each day rather than assuming that an inland base means a particular price or atmosphere.
Kamari and Perissa are the beach alternatives in this comparison. Start with the exact stretch of coast you want to use, then compare access to your room and the transport you need for outings elsewhere. The beach guide explains the island’s coastal choices; a beach-town address alone does not describe every part of the shoreline.
When your base is chosen, an island outing can connect it with other areas. The private driver-guide excursion shown here includes hotel, port or airport pickup and drop-off, private air-conditioned transport and bottled water. It is an excursion booking, separate from your accommodation, and can be considered for a day away from your base.
Steps, luggage and the reachable entrance
Ask for the route from the nearest vehicle stopping point to the actual room entrance. Useful questions concern steps, steep sections and whether luggage must be carried along the final approach. Photographs of a terrace or a pool are less useful for this decision than a clear entrance description.
Plan walking around the conditions too. Village routes can be steep and stepped, and the walking guidance for the island emphasises water, firm footwear and avoiding extreme heat. If access is a deciding factor, establish the suitability of the particular room and its approach before making the accommodation choice.
Airport, ferry and excursion pickups
For flights, match your base with the JTR airport connection. For ferries, arrange transport from Athinios, which is different from the Old Port below Fira. Keep those names in your booking information so your driver and accommodation understand the same arrival plan.
For Oia-area travel, take the Ammoudi restrictions into account. The rules reported on 28 April 2026 restrict ordinary traffic from the ring-road junction until 31 March 2027, while allowing specified exceptions including authorised shuttles. Choose a reachable meeting point rather than building your plan around unrestricted car access to Ammoudi.
Climate resilience fee and the room budget
The climate resilience fee applies per room or apartment and daily use, rather than per guest. Its amount depends on the legal accommodation category and season. Include it in your budget as a separate question alongside the room arrangement, especially when comparing different property categories.
Private short-term rentals have their own categories, so do not apply a hotel category simply because a listing calls a property an apartment. Ask which legal category applies and how the fee is collected. Keep this room charge separate from transport fares and any charges attached to individual activities.
