Fira Santorini above the caldera

Fira is Santorini’s capital and its largest town in the municipal description. Its development began in the 18th century, and it became the capital in the 19th century. Cave houses, churches and museums belong to the town’s character. Make time to see the settlement as well as using it as a place to change buses or descend to a boat.

The main distinction for planning is between Fira on the caldera rim and the Old Port below it. The cable car links those places. Athinios, where ferries arrive, is a different harbour. That distinction affects everything from meeting a guide to joining a sailing trip, so match the exact place on your booking to the journey you are arranging.

A town walk and the Museum of Prehistoric Thera

Combine the caldera setting with the town’s historical layers: Fira’s cave houses and churches belong to a much later landscape than the prehistoric finds in its museum. If you want the early settlement story as well, the history guide connects the periods without merging the island’s different archaeological places into one attraction.

The Museum of Prehistoric Thera displays Akrotiri finds and frescoes. Its admission is separate: EUR 10 regular or EUR 5 for eligible reduced admission. Published hours are 08:30 to 15:30, closed on Tuesday, with last admission at 15:10. Put the museum early enough in your day to spend time inside; a late-afternoon arrival in Fira is a different plan from a museum visit.

The Old Port and the cable car

The cable car runs between Fira and the Old Port. The operator tariff is EUR 10 for a one-way ride, with EUR 5 reduced fares for eligible passengers and a EUR 5 baggage charge. Keep the fare separate from the cost of an excursion. A boat booking and the journey down to its meeting point are different parts of the day.

For cruise arrivals, tenders use the Old Port below Fira. Plan around your ship’s tender arrangements, reaching the town and returning to the port. The shore-excursion guide explains this journey in more detail. Avoid treating the cable-car ride alone as a measure of the total time between a cruise ship and a meeting point in town.

Fira as a bus connection point

The airport bus connects Santorini Airport with Fira, and travellers continuing to Oia change in Fira. Tickets are obtained from bus staff. Use the airport guide for that arrival and the arrival guide for ferries into Athinios. Keeping those approaches separate prevents a ferry arrival from being mistaken for a cable-car connection.

For a day out, choose between a bus journey to Oia, time at a beach town or a caldera walk. Check the current outward and return departures together. The timetable changed to its November version on 1 November 2026; summer services are not a dependable basis for a winter connection. Leave room between a town visit and any fixed departure.

A volcano outing and a longer caldera walk

The featured three-hour boat outing starts at Fira Old Port. It includes a guided volcano hike, a tour escort and a hot-springs visit with foam swimming noodles. Reach the harbour meeting point 45 minutes before departure as instructed for this product. This is a boat excursion, so reserve separate time for the town and the museum rather than folding them into its duration.

The Nea Kameni park ticket is separate from the boat ticket; the regular 2026 park tariff is EUR 5. The Palea Kameni swimming stop is another station and is unsuitable for non-swimmers. For an outing entirely on land, the Fira to Oia route has a planning distance of 10.5 km and a guideline of 3 to 5 hours. Take water, firm shoes and a plan for returning rather than treating it as a short extension of a town stroll.
