Santorini Beach Guide: Kamari, Perissa and Red Beach Access

A Santorini beach visit starts with volcanic sand and coastal scenery. Choose your shore, plan the journey and take the Red Beach path warning seriously.

Choosing a Santorini beach for your day

A Santorini beach day offers a different landscape from the white settlements above the caldera. Kamari, Perissa and Perivolos have black sand; Vlychada combines dark sand with pale volcanic rock. Decide whether you want time beside the sea or a short coastal stop during an island outing, because those plans leave very different amounts of time for travelling and walking.

Keep your beach choice separate from a photograph of the cliffs. Red Beach, near Akrotiri, is known for red rock, but its footpath has a reported closure after rockfalls. For an uncomplicated plan, start by comparing Kamari and Perissa with your accommodation location and the day’s transport. The area guide helps distinguish beach towns from caldera settlements.

Kamari, Perissa and Perivolos

Kamari and Perissa are beach towns, making them useful places to consider when the shore itself is the purpose of the day. Perivolos, also described with Agios Georgios in the coastal overview, shares the black-sand character. Choose a destination first and allow time there rather than trying to combine every named beach with Oia and a caldera walk.

Fira is the transport reference point for the island bus network. Look at the current outward and return services together before leaving for a beach town. Seasonal schedules matter, especially if your return has to connect with an evening activity. The Fira guide explains the distinction between the town, its Old Port and the separate ferry harbour.

Vlychada and reaching Monolithos

Vlychada’s pale volcanic rocks set it apart visually from the black-sand shores. Treat the cliffs as part of the landscape to observe and follow signs governing access. Bring what you need for your own time by the sea rather than assuming that a particular beach service, rental price or boat connection will be available when you arrive.

Monolithos is another destination to consider when checking bus connections from Fira. The KTEL fare table dated 3 June 2026 listed Kamari and Monolithos at EUR 2.20 from Fira, and Perissa and Vlychada at EUR 2.70. Those are dated fare examples; use the current timetable and fare information for your actual journey. Summer departure frequencies should not shape a winter plan.

Red Beach Santorini and the cliff-path warning

A report updated on 27 September 2026 describes the Red Beach cliff footpath as remaining closed after rockfalls. Plan around that reported closure and obey barriers and local instructions. An older, undated visitor description of a foot approach should not be used as a route instruction for your visit. Do not attempt an alternative way around a barrier.

Keep Red Beach out of a fixed swimming itinerary beneath the cliffs. Seeing the bay from the water is a separate activity, and a boat itinerary is not permission to land on the beach or a safety assurance about the rock face. If the scenery interests you, consider the wider Akrotiri area and archaeological visit as a different purpose for travelling south.

Ammoudi restrictions and the excursion boundary

Ammoudi belongs to the Oia area and has its own access rules. The protection measures reported on 28 April 2026, with a stated term to 31 March 2027, distinguish the permitted Ammoudi to Oia footpath from the closed Ammoudi to Agios Nikolaos path. Do not include the latter as a route to swimming cliffs. These rules are separate from Red Beach.

The featured five-hour minibus outing visits Oia, traditional villages and Black Beach. It includes driver commentary, air-conditioned transport and bottled water; the programme allows free time for swimming and lunch. It starts above the Fira cable car, so getting to that meeting point is part of your own planning. Choose it for a mixed island day, and choose an independent beach visit when you want the shore to occupy most of your time.

Frequently asked questions

Does the beach outing include a meal?

The minibus outing provides free time for lunch, shopping and swimming. A prepared meal is not listed among its included services. Bottled water and driver commentary are included.

Can I use the Red Beach footpath?

Plan around the footpath closure reported on 27 September 2026 after rockfalls. Follow barriers and local directions rather than an undated walking description, and do not use a bypass route.

Where should I check beach transport?

Use the current bus information for departures from Fira and plan the return at the same time. The November timetable differs from summer information, so leave room between a beach visit and a later booking.
